History of CRC

The CRC is an independent devision of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete, located at the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine (CSFM), Faculty of Medicine. It was founded in 1992 by the late Ioannis Vlachonikolis (Professor of the University of Crete), who was also in charge for the scientific coordination of the CRC until 1998.

Currently, it is supported by the Department of Medical Oncology of the University General Hospital of Heraklion (Director of CRC: Prof. V.Georgoulias) and the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine (Scientific director and coordinator of CRC: Prof. C.Lionis).

The CRC history could be grouped in three time-periods, as follows:

  1. 1992-1998: Data were collected by recorders using two paper forms (one for patients and one for deaths) visiting all hospitals and registry offices of the island. The statistician was responsible for data entry (from paper to statistical software). Data of 1992-1998 were recorded during that period.
  2. 1999-2013: Data were collected by recorders according to the old procedure (1992-1998). There was a person responsible for data entry in the “access” environment and a statistician responsible for data analysis. Data of 1999-2004 were recorded during that period.
  3. 2014-prospectively: Data are collected by trained recorders who visit hospitals and registry offices of the island and are responsible for data collection and entry using the CRC platform through a lap top. The CRC platform is connected to the server as well as to statistical and geospatial softwares. Data of 2005-2014 will be collected until January 2015 when data collection for 2015 will continue prospectively.
